Robert Wygant

Obituary of Robert Wygant

Robert Wygant, 92, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2021, at his residence in Alpharetta, GA.
Born in Albany, NY in 1929, Bob spent most of his life in the Capital District and grew up in the Albany
Home for Children, having been placed there by his mother, Helen, who could not keep him due to her
ill health.
As a young man, Bob enjoyed great success in sports as a multi-letter athlete in baseball, track,
basketball, and football at Albany High School and was inducted into the AHS Hall of Fame in 2009. A
sports columnist for the Times Union nicknamed him “Wiggles” Wygant, a tribute to his moves as a star
running back on the high school football team. He was recruited by many colleges and universities but
committed to Rutgers University, where he continued to excel in football and graduated in 1952. Bob
played football all four years at Rutgers and held a longstanding record for the longest run from
scrimmage – an 80-yard scamper against rival Princeton in 1949.
Bob’s love of sports remained a passion after college, pursuing a career in education as a gym teacher,
coach and athletic director at Maple Hill High School in Castleton. Bob ‘s student athletes at Maple Hill
enjoyed remarkable success under his leadership. He found inspiration in teaching students how to
build confidence in themselves and their abilities, always encouraging them to improve. Bob was an
avid fan of the Yankees and NY Giants, and he was an active Let’s Go Red supporter of RPI Hockey.
He took his passion for education further as he advanced into school administration as Vice Principal at
Goff Middle School in East Greenbush, NY. He cared about each student in school but held a special
place in his heart for children with special needs and family challenges.
Bob never forgot where he came from, nor those who surrounded him during his lifetime. He was active
in restoration and preservation of history at the Albany Home for Children, which became the Parsons
Child and Family Center and has now become integral to Northern Rivers. He was actively involved with
the staff and families at Parsons. He treasured the annual awards ceremony at The Bob Wygant Activity
Center, a living memorial to his devotion to all those who were impacted by their experience at Parsons.
Bob will be remembered for his athletic prowess, dedication to coaching and teaching, enthusiasm for
people to participate at every level and his dedication. No one who knew Bob can forget his smile.
Bob is survived by his wife, Sally, five children (Gary Wygant, Cindy Laviolette, Cindy Kirchberger, Jim
Kirchberger and Lisa Moore), eleven grandchildren (Amanda, James, Eddie, Carrie, Ariel, Laura, Jason,
Jennifer, Holly, Shane and Quinn). “Papa Bob” is also cherished by ten great-grandchildren (Caroline,
Riley, Clara, Ella, Tucker, Amalia, Grant, Victoria, Griffin and Eugene).
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Hutson, and by one grandchild, his namesake,
Robert Edmund Wygant, who died in 2020.
Per his wishes, a memorial gathering is being planned for later in 2021 at the Bob Wygant Activities
Center, thanks to the love and generosity of the Parsons / Northern Rivers organization. Arrangements
