Obituary of Darmanlingum Whitlingum

Darmanlingum “Harris” Whitlingum, age 77, born on November 21, 1943 in Guyana, South America, passed away peacefully in East Greenbush, NY on August 27, 2021.

Harris resided in North Adams, MA for 46 years before moving to his final home in East Greenbush, NY.

While in North Adams, Harris worked in Textile Operations for Waverly Fabrics through retirement.  Into retirement, he then proceeded to open and operate his own Sewing Machine Repair business successfully for over 25 years.

As we all know, Harris' many talents reached far beyond just sewing machines.  From repairing his own cars to building his own furniture, to all the many home remodels and additions, there was nothing he couldn’t accomplish with his heart’s desire.  He always kept busy with his hands, especially with his finely crafted carpentry and woodworking skills.

Harris was preceded in death by his parents David and Kadirbee.  He is survived by 3 brothers, Lawrence of England, Leonard of North Adams, Joseph of North Carolina, and 2 sisters, Ester of England, Glorine of Florida, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren, and their families, along with his loving wife Leila of 54 years and their two sons and family, Andrew, Beth, and Aurora, and Philip, Alicia, and Kyla.

He was a devout family-man who always believed in God and Family as the foundations to his life and success.  As quoted in Luke 1:35, he always believed, "For with God, nothing shall be impossible.”

He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends and family in every aspect of his life.  He shared lots of love and laughter with all those around him.

Harris will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at William J Rockefeller Funeral Home in Rensselaer, NY on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, with viewing hours from 9:30-11:00, and services from 11:00-12:00.  Burial services will be held at Southview Cemetery in North Adams, MA at 1:30pm on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 as well.
