Obituary for Philip Schweig
Philip Schweig was born on August 19, 1949 in New York City. He died at home in East Greenbush, NY on May 17, 2021, of lung cancer.
Philip was a natural athlete who was a local long-distance running star when he was young. He had a quick and inquisitive mind and a savant’s skill for numerical calculations, geographic navigation, word games, and all sorts of trivia.
Throughout his life Philip found great joy traversing geographic, linguistic, cultural, and literary frontiers. He was an adventurer and an explorer, as enchanted by museums as by mountains. One of his most exceptional qualities was his ability and desire to share his knowledge and interests with others. He was also a prolific letter and postcard writer, leaving behind these artifacts of his affection.
Philip would say that his most spectacular accomplishment was meeting and spending his life with his wife of 50 years, Sylvie, and that his most unwavering and profound passion was for the family they shared. He especially enjoyed his role as Gramps to his two beloved grandchildren.
Philip is survived by his wife, Sylvie, his children Alex (Nataly Reed) and Rebecca (William Bailey) and grandchildren Silas and Sage.
