Obituary of Edgar A. Terry

AVERILL PARK - Edgar A. Terry, 93, of Averill Park, passed away Friday, June 5, 2020, at his home on Burden Lake with his children by his side.  Edgar was born December 6, 1926, in Queens, New York, the son of Floyd and Mary Rose (Breitkopf) Terry and grew up in Hoag’s Corner in East Nassau where in 1946, he met his beloved wife Beverly at a square dance, which they loved to do.

 He served proudly in the Navy during World War II. Edgar was the Owner of Terry's Shell Station in East Greenbush for over 38 years and drove a bus for BOCES until retiring.

 Edgar loved living on Burden Lake and watching his family enjoy boating, water skiing and tubing.  He was always the first to offer a boat ride to anyone that stopped by.  He loved watching his daughters ski and teaching all five of his kids how to drive a boat.  He loved camping and traveling to Maine with his wife Beverly and family.  He was snowmobile enthusiast riding with his sons until he was 90 and often traveled to Old Forge NY and Canada to explore the trails.

 Edgar was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Lebanon Valley Speedway in 1988 and was a charter member of Northeast Stock Car Old Timers (NESCO).  Growing up nearby in Hoags Corners, Edgar picked corn on the farm that later became Lebanon Valley Speedway.  He loved stock car driving and was proud owner, sponsor and driver for numerous cars.  He owned or sponsored race cars #33 driven by Bill Webb, #X100 Ernie Martin, Bob Fredette, Clinton Bonner, Jr and himself, #731 Don Clark and Dick Hanson, #187 Ken Sheldon and his son Jay Terry.  Edgar was also known for bringing the first overhead cam Chevrolet engine to Lebanon Valley Speedway and sold racecar driver Tommy Corellis, his first car. 

Edgar loved deer hunting in Chenango County and all over the Adirondacks, with his lifelong friends Richie Kingston and “Uncle Bill” Simpson.  He was also a member of the Nassau Sportsman Club, the American Legion and the Elks Club. 

Survivors include daughter Aleta (Allen)Schweigert, daughter Cathy (Joseph) Reppenhagen, daughter Gail (Jim) Hall, son Edgar (Sherry)Terry Jr., son Jeffrey (Cheryl Swenson) Terry.  Grandchildren:  Steven Taylor, Paul (Angel) Schweigert, Jonathan Taylor, Jetta (John) Hall, Kendra (Joey) Thiele, Edgar Terry III, 10 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Granddaughter, and the entire amazing Clinton Bonner Sr Family, and Long time friends Richard Kingston and Yvon Bourret. 

He was predeceased by his loving wife Beverly Jeane (Bonner), Sister Annette Simpson, Brother Charles David Terry.

While still maintaining social distancing guidelines, relatives and Friends are invited to attend his calling hours 4-7 pm on Monday at the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home Inc., 165 Columbia Tpk in Rensselaer. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bloomingrove Cemetery North Greenbush.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Edgar’s name to NESCO (Northeast Stock Car Old Timers, 4 Cherry Vale E. Greenbush NY 12061.
