Obituary of George William Stone
George W. Stone, 86, of East Greenbush, NY, passed away on November 8, 2019.
Funeral service will be held at 9:00am Monday, November 11th at Rockefeller Funeral Home at 165 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer and 9:30am at the Church of St. Mary, 163 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, with Reverend Thomas Konopka officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Rockefeller Funeral Home this Sunday, November 10th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
George was born in Albany, NY to George F. Stone and Mary E. Stone, on September 14, 1933. He went to high school at St. John's in Rensselaer, NY and graduated in 1952. He was most proud of his time in the service at the rank of 2nd Class Aviation Machinist Mate in the United States Navy where he traveled extensively in the Mediterranean and US. He went on to earn an Associate’s degree from Hudson Valley Community College. He was a Manager at Bowling Green in East Greenbush and then Norlite in Cohoes before retiring.
George was a longtime and active volunteer and parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Rensselaer and enjoyed attending mass at several churches throughout the community. He volunteered his time at Albany Medical Center and he enjoyed spending time at the East Greenbush YMCA. He experienced fun times trying his luck with the horses at Saratoga, and in his earlier years, ice fishing with friends and family on Lake Champlain. He was blessed to enjoy the company of many close friends after living in the Rensselaer/East Greenbush area his whole life.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mollie, who also grew up in the Rensselaer area. He is survived by his three children, John J. Stone of San Tan Valley, AZ, George M. Stone (wife Andree) of Larchmont, NY and Jean M. Horner (husband Eric) of Denver, CO, his sister Mary (husband Lowell) Christman, four grandchildren (Ryan, Isabelle, Matthew and William), two great grandchildren, as well as, nieces (Marjorie and Deborah), and nephews (David and Jerry). He is preceded in death by his sister Betty Smith and son Matthew.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 163 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, NY 12144.
