Obituary of Fred P. Markiewicz
April 27, 1948 – October 22, 2019
“The King of Schodack”
When I think about Fred, my first thought is of his sparking eyes. Then, how he never seemed to age very much from the last time I had seen him, even if years had passed.
Fred was an intentional man, who liked things just so, and was easily able to make that known to the people in his life. Be it the way his bed was made, where he plopped his coat and book bag, where he placed his chair in his classroom at program, and, speaking of chairs – how he would arrange the dining room at his home, Fred did things with a purpose. It was our job, and our joy, to help him maintain a life of comfort and contentment while he found his joy in every day.
Fred had a playful and sometime mischievous sense of humor. Memories of him smiling and laughing while tossing a ball, running out the door (often with no shoes on!) stacking and knocking over cups, and the grin he would get when it was time to eat (or while trying to swipe something extra when you weren’t looking) ware some of the of the ways he gave back to the people who were there to give of themselves to him and the gift to us he leaves behind.
Fred’s deliberate nature helped him adjust to a new normal in the last year when some of the things he previously loved became more difficult for him. Determined to stay a part of his Schodack and East Greenbush family, he amazed us every day, still with a sparkle in his eyes.
Fred’s family, his brother Duane and sister in law Elizabeth, want to offer their sincerest thanks and gratitude for the care that Fred received over the 30+ years he lived at Schodack and attended Day Program. The appreciation they feel for how he was cared for, and loved by Living Resources, is another reminder of how much it matters what you do every day. They also want to offer their gratitude to the staff at Albany Med, who also cared for Fred with great compassion.
Friends will be invited to a memorial and celebration of Fred’s life at Schodack in the near future. All are invited now to share your memories of Fred, and encouraged to be kind to each other, and to Fred’s friends at program and at home, who are also experiencing this loss.
Over the years, Fred was cared for by people from all walks of life, all faiths and from all over the world. May it be a great comfort to think of all the ways that his life is being honored now by each of you.
