Obituary of James R. Lichtel

James R. Lichtel Lichtel, James R. ROANOKE, Va. James R. Lichtel, age 71, died peacefully at home in Roanoke, Va. on Sunday, February 27, 2011. Born in Hudson, N.Y. and raised in Chatham, N.Y. by Robert and Christina Lichtel. Husband of Eugenia Staerker-Lichtel. Predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Angela Lombardy Lichtel. Father of Mary Ellen (Michael) Smith and Melissa (Randy Lightbody) Lichtel. Grandfather of Robert T. and Angela M. Smith; brother of Lisbeth (Pierre) Gontier. Also survived by extended family and friends. Jim had 30 plus years of continuous insurance experience. He started his insurance career in Syracuse, N.Y. as a licensed general independent adjuster for Crawford and Company. From there he was employed by the Travelers Insurance Company, holding various positions, retiring after 20 years to join Underwriters Rating Board as director of research and development in 1988 and assumed managership in 1993. Jim was a chartered property casualty underwriter and held Insurance Institute of America certificates in general insurance, associate in claims and associate in risk management. He was a licensed general insurance consultant, general independent adjuster and broker. For approximately 20 years Jim served as an adjunct instructor for the finance department at Siena College lecturing on property and casualty insurance and later developed and implemented an agents/brokers licensing program. He was a former past president of the Northeastern New York Chapter of CPCU. He currently served on the boards of the Mid-Hudson Co-Operative Insurance Co., and Security Mutual Insurance Company. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at The Church of St. Mary at Clinton Heights, 163 Columbia Tpk, Rensselaer, N.Y. at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made, to the charity of one's choice, in memory of Jim.
