Joseph Romer Jr.

East Greenbush - Joseph Romer Jr., 88,  passed away peacefully after a brief illness, Friday, October 22, 2021, at St Peter's Hospital.

Joseph was born November 17, 1932, in Rensselaer, New York, the son of Joseph and Anna (Lauer) Romer Sr.

Joseph is a proud Army veteran of the Korean War.  He was a Supervisor and Fire Chief for BASF for over 40 years.  In his early years, Joseph was known for stock car racing at Lebanon Valley Speedway in car #631.  He then became a loving husband and father and he enjoyed time with his family while often working three jobs. For many years, he worked tirelessly on weekends at Rose’s Pizzeria owned by his in-laws, John and Mel Figel.  He could often be seen from the counter making pizzas.  He loved his pets over the years including Lady, Rascal, Buffy, and Peeve.  In his retirement, he became a much loved school bus driver for EGCSD.  Then, after Peg’s retirement, he and Peg became snowbirds and spent many wonderful winters basking in the sun in Vero Beach, Florida.  He was an avid golfer but often said that his putting was “terr-ble”.  While in Florida, he even had a brief career as a starter at the Vista Plantation Golf Course.  Among all of the things that he enjoyed in his life, he enjoyed most being a papa to his 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.  He will always be remembered as the rock of the family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Margaret “Peggy” (Figel) Romer, his children Anne (Donald) Smith, Patricia (Bill) Douglas, Beth (Kevin) Symons, Joseph J. (Wendy) Romer.  He was the proud Papa of Sarah (Joseph) Faas, Amanda (Albertus) Marais, Melanie (Brian) Sheldon, Kevin (Madelyn) Symons, Brianna Romer, Hayden Romer and Andrea (Jason) Majewski; and the even prouder great grandfather of Liliana Faas and Rosalia Majewski.  Joe was the beloved brother of Mary Catizone, Helen Garceau, Dorothy Rapp, Ann Bonner, Betty (James) Wall, Barbara (Leonard) Smith, Michael (Mary) Romer, Henry (Helene) Romer, William (Deborah) Romer, John (Sharon) Romer, and loving brother-in-law of Valerie (Peter) Femia.  He was also a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Sunday at the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home Inc., 165 Columbia Tpk in Rensselaer. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday at the Holy Spirit Church. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in Joseph’s name to a charity of the donor's choice.
